Automotive applications of Sensalight Technology lasers include lasers for blood alcohol content measurements or breath alcohol content measurements for alcolocks in passenger cars, trucks, busses vessels, aircraft in order to prevent drunk driving which is the cause of many thousand accidents with fatal outcomes and total costs exceeding 100 billion US$, in the US and the EU per year, respectively. Currently Sensalight is engaged in R&D on this and other topics in order to provide lasers to automotive suppliers laser after the end of the R&D period and qualification tests by automotive suppliers and car manufacturers. Other automotive applications include quantitative measurement of engine combustion products like NOx, COx etc..
Widely tuneable sensing lasers open a number of application fields in medical diagnostics. Noninvasive laser measurements can be used for example to monitor the blood sugar (glucose) content of diabetes patients, avoiding the need to take blood one or more times per day. Due the need to penetrate through tissue and the measurement of fairly complex spectral signatues in a liquid, several lasers emitting at different wavelengths or a properly adjusted widely tuneable laser are required.
Widely tuneable sensing lasers permit ppm- to ppb-range detection of pollutants and other trace gases in our environment. Many of these gases have chracteristic spectral feature in the 3 µm to 6 µm wavelength range. Up to now it was necessary to include a dedicated sensing laser for each gas to be detected in the sensing systems. Applications using the new Sensalight Technologies widely tuneable laser concept permit to reduce the number of lasers and thereby the cost required strongly. If the gases to be detected have suitable transitions separated not more than 200 nm to about 300 nm then one widely tuneable laser might suffice.
Laser based sensing permits to detect toxic gases or gas products indicating for example the outbreak of fire with high sensitivity and virtually free of false alarms. Widely tuneable lasers enable a detection sensitivity in the ppM to ppB range in addition to their multi gas detection capability.
